BEFORE YOU APPROACH A CAREER OR FINANCIALLY INDEPENDENT WOMAN, KNOW THIS AND KNOW PEACE!
She has her own money and can pay her own bills. So, what exactly does she want from a man? The answer may surprise you!
As a professional matchmaker and relationship coach with a background in psychology, I have had the opportunity to observe different relationship preferences, expectations, and patterns in the course of my work.
And there is something I want us to discuss.
As a matchmaker, I often hear men say, “Shakara Matchmaker, I prefer a career woman or a financially independent woman.”
Whenever I hear this, I become curious about what lies behind that preference.
Because, sometimes, what a man really means is, “I want a woman who earns her own money so I won’t have to spend so much on her.”
My brothers, if this is your reason for seeking a career woman or a financially independent woman, please, let’s have a conversation.
You may be making a very costly assumption about the very woman you want to date.
HER FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE DOES NOT MEAN YOU WILL SPEND LESS
Some men believe that dating a financially independent woman automatically means fewer financial responsibilities. They assume she will pay her own bills, take care of herself, and require little or no financial contribution from them.
In fact, some men may be more willing to spend generously on a woman they perceive as financially dependent while becoming unnecessarily calculating with a woman who earns her own money.
You may be willing to spend ₦20,000 on one woman because you believe she needs your help, but when you meet a woman who earns a good salary or runs a successful business, suddenly you begin to calculate every little thing because, after all, she can afford it herself.
My brothers, pause and think about this.
Her ability to pay for herself does not automatically mean she wants a relationship in which she must always pay for herself.
There is a difference between a woman being able to meet her needs and a woman wanting to carry every responsibility alone, including those that could be shared with a partner.
She may be financially independent, but she is still a woman who may appreciate generosity, thoughtful gestures, practical support, and the feeling of being cared for.
Remember, the purpose of a relationship is not simply to find someone who cannot survive without you. It is to find someone with whom you can build a meaningful life.
HER TASTE AND LIFESTYLE MAY BE HIGHER THAN YOU EXPECT
Now, this is where some men may be in for a surprise.
A woman who earns her own money may already have a particular lifestyle. She has worked hard to establish herself, and her income may have exposed her to experiences, standards, and comforts she values.
She may enjoy good restaurants, quality items, travelling when she can afford it, maintaining her appearance, and enjoying the finer things she has worked hard to provide for herself.
These are not necessarily things she is waiting for a man to introduce her to. She may already be enjoying them.
Consequently, you cannot assume that because she is financially independent, a little token or the barest minimum will easily impress her.
She may not be impressed simply because you bought her something inexpensive, especially if the gesture appears thoughtless or you expect it to earn you unlimited appreciation.
Let me clarify something, though. This does not mean every financially independent woman has expensive tastes, or that a man must be wealthy to date one. Women have different preferences, and many appreciate simple things.
The point is that you must understand the woman you want to pursue instead of assuming that her financial independence makes her easier or cheaper to impress.
If she values a particular lifestyle, you need to understand whether your expectations, values, and financial realities are compatible.
Do not pretend to be someone you are not. Do not promise what you cannot sustain. But do not deliberately offer the bare minimum simply because you believe she has enough money to take care of herself.
SHE APPRECIATES EFFORT, NOT JUST A TOKEN
There is a difference between giving a woman something and making her feel considered.
A woman who can afford her own dinner may still appreciate you making a reservation at a restaurant she enjoys. She may be able to buy her own perfume but still feel special when you remember the fragrance she mentioned. She may be able to pay for her own holiday but still enjoy having a partner who plans a beautiful getaway for both of you.
Do you see the difference?
The issue is not always the amount of money involved. It is the thought, intention, planning, and effort behind the gesture.
Of course, a simple gift can be meaningful, and nobody should have to spend beyond their means to prove their love. But you cannot replace genuine effort with occasional tokens while expecting a woman to be impressed by the mere fact that you did something.
A financially independent woman may appreciate a man who takes initiative, makes plans, remembers important details, and demonstrates through his actions that he wants to make her happy.
She may be able to buy herself what she wants, but she can still enjoy receiving something thoughtful from someone who genuinely cares about her.
Do not confuse her ability to provide for herself with an inability to appreciate being treated well.
And if her preferred lifestyle is beyond what you can comfortably accommodate, that is a conversation about compatibility—not a reason to resent her standards or misrepresent your capacity.
SHE WANTS A MAN WHO CAN MAKE HER BREATHE
My brothers, this is one part I really want you to understand.
A woman who is building a career or running a business may already be dealing with deadlines, demanding clients, financial decisions, family responsibilities, employees, and the everyday pressure of keeping her life together.
She may spend much of her day making decisions, solving problems, and taking responsibility for outcomes.
Sometimes, she has to be strong even when she is tired. She has to figure things out even when she would rather have someone help her. She may have people depending on her, bills to pay, goals to achieve, and responsibilities that do not disappear simply because she has had a difficult day.
And then she decides to open her heart to a relationship.
Sometimes, she doesn’t want another person to manage. She wants a partner she can breathe around.
She wants a man whose presence allows her to relax after a demanding day. A man who can take initiative instead of leaving every decision to her. A man who notices when she is overwhelmed, offers support without waiting to be begged, and understands that even a capable woman appreciates being cared for.
She wants to enjoy love, too.
She wants to laugh, feel cherished, receive thoughtful gestures, and sometimes let someone else take the lead. She wants to know that she does not have to be the strong one every single time.
And yes, financial consideration can be part of that experience.
She may be capable of paying her own bills, but she can still appreciate a man who takes her out, plans something beautiful, gives generously within his means, or willingly shoulders a responsibility when she needs support.
She may not need you to rescue her financially, but she may appreciate knowing that she does not have to carry every burden alone.
Beyond money, she wants emotional ease. She does not want to spend her days dealing with work pressure only to enter a relationship where she must chase communication, decode mixed signals, tolerate hot-and-cold behaviour, or repeatedly explain the importance of consideration.
She has enough challenges in life. She wants a relationship that feels like companionship, not another burden.
So, before you approach her, ask yourself: are you prepared to bring peace, partnership, and genuine care into her life, or are you simply hoping her independence will make your own responsibilities lighter?
Because she may not need you to save her, but she may want you to be a place where she can rest.
And there is a difference.
SHE DOES NOT HAVE THE PATIENCE FOR HOT-AND-COLD BEHAVIOUR
Let us talk about consistency.
A woman who has worked hard to build her life may have little appetite for unnecessary emotional confusion. She may already have enough demands on her time and energy without having to figure out why a man is attentive today and distant tomorrow.
One day, you are calling, texting, showing interest, and making promises. The next day, you disappear without explanation. When you return, you expect her to continue as though nothing happened.
You are interested when it suits you, but when it is time to communicate clearly, discuss expectations, or demonstrate consistency, you become unavailable.
My brother, what exactly do you expect her to do with that?
She does not necessarily expect you to be available every minute of the day. She understands that you have responsibilities of your own. A mature woman can understand that you are busy, tired, or dealing with a difficult situation.
But there is a difference between being busy and being inconsistent.
There is a difference between needing space and deliberately leaving someone confused.
There is a difference between having genuine responsibilities and using them as a permanent excuse for poor communication.
If you are interested in her, communicate. If you are busy, say so. If something has changed, explain it. If you want a relationship, let your actions support your words.
Do not expect her to spend her limited emotional energy chasing you, decoding your intentions, or wondering whether you are still interested.
She may be willing to build with you, but she should not have to do all the emotional work while you contribute only when it is convenient.
SHE WANTS A PARTNER, NOT ANOTHER RESPONSIBILITY
Financial independence does not mean a woman has stopped wanting companionship. It does not mean she no longer wants affection, attention, reassurance, or practical support.
She may be perfectly capable of running her business, managing her finances, making decisions, and solving problems. Yet, she may still desire a man who is emotionally mature, dependable, thoughtful, and supportive.
She may want someone with whom she can discuss a difficult day without being dismissed. Someone who can make plans without expecting her to organise everything. Someone who listens, follows through, and takes responsibility for his part in the relationship.
She may want a man who can recognise when she needs support rather than waiting for her to break down before offering it.
This is not about treating her like a helpless person. It is about understanding that being capable does not eliminate the need for companionship.
She can be strong and still want softness in her relationship. She can be financially capable and still appreciate generosity. She can manage her life and still want a partner who makes life more enjoyable.
The right relationship should not become a competition over who needs whom less. It should be a partnership in which both people feel valued and supported.
And if you are looking for a woman who will contribute financially, that is a perfectly reasonable preference to discuss. What matters is that you both understand what you expect from each other and agree on how you want the relationship to work.
DO NOT ADMIRE HER STRENGTH ONLY BECAUSE IT REDUCES YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
This is where I want men to reflect honestly.
Do you genuinely admire the woman you say you want, or do you simply admire the convenience you believe she will bring into your life?
Do you appreciate her ambition, intelligence, discipline, and ability to build something for herself? Or are you mainly interested in the idea that she will not ask you for much?
Because there is a difference between appreciating a woman’s independence and using that independence as an excuse to do less.
You cannot celebrate her ability to earn money when it means you do not have to contribute, then become uncomfortable when she expects generosity, consideration, or meaningful effort from you.
You cannot say you want a strong woman but expect her to carry the emotional weight of the relationship alone.
You cannot admire her achievements while dismissing her need for affection, attention, and support.
And you cannot assume that because she can take care of herself, she should automatically accept a relationship in which she receives very little from you.
A healthy relationship is not about proving that one person needs the other more. It is about two people choosing to contribute to each other’s lives in ways that work for them.
If you want a woman who earns well, be honest about your expectations. If you prefer to split expenses, discuss it. If you value traditional financial roles, communicate that too.
But do not enter a relationship with unspoken assumptions and then become resentful when the woman turns out to have expectations of her own.
BEFORE YOU APPROACH HER, KNOW WHAT YOU ARE READY TO OFFER
My brothers, I am not saying that every career woman wants an expensive lifestyle, that every financially independent woman expects a man to pay for everything, or that you must be wealthy before you approach one.
That is not the message.
Some women value a modest lifestyle. Some prefer shared expenses. Some place greater emphasis on emotional connection, while others consider financial generosity and lifestyle compatibility very important. Many value a combination of these things.
The point is to stop making assumptions based on a woman’s earning capacity.
Find out what matters to her. Understand her values, lifestyle, expectations, and relationship goals. Be honest about what you can offer and what you expect in return.
If you cannot sustain the lifestyle she desires, acknowledge that. If your financial philosophies are different, discuss them. If you want a woman who will contribute to shared expenses, be clear about that before either of you becomes deeply invested.
And above all, understand that what a woman can afford for herself is not necessarily what she wants to experience in a relationship.
She may want generosity without financial irresponsibility. She may want support without dependency. She may want a strong partnership without losing her independence.
These things are not contradictions.
MY FINAL WORD TO THE MEN
As a matchmaker, my work is not simply to introduce a man to a woman because they look good together on paper. It is to encourage people to understand what they want, what they can offer, and whether their expectations are compatible.
So, my brothers, if you prefer a career woman or a financially independent woman, ask yourself why.
Is it because you admire her character, ambition, intelligence, and values? Is it because you believe you can build a fulfilling partnership with her?
Or is it because you assume that her financial independence means you will have fewer responsibilities, spend less money, and make less effort?
If it is the latter, I encourage you to reconsider your approach.
A financially independent woman may already have a life she has worked hard to build. She may have standards shaped by her experiences, a lifestyle she enjoys, and little interest in unnecessary emotional complications.
She may not need you to rescue her, but she may appreciate your generosity. She may not need you to pay every bill, but she may want a partner who willingly contributes. She may not need you to solve every problem, but she may want to feel supported. She may be strong enough to handle life alone, but that does not mean she wants to feel alone in a relationship.
Do not pursue her because you think she will be cheap to love. Pursue her because you are ready to build a relationship in which both of you feel valued, cared for, and understood.
And remember, the goal is not to impress a woman with money you do not have or to pretend to be someone you are not. It is to show up as a man who understands partnership, communicates honestly, makes a genuine effort, and is compatible with the woman he chooses.
Because, at the end of the day, a relationship is not simply about what either person can afford. It is about what the two of you are willing and able to build together.
Until next time, let us keep learning, growing, and making wiser choices in love.
Yours in love and relationship understanding,
